Family Farm Tips from

Karen’s Garden Delights

Tuesday, May 24 6:30-8 pm

Highland Square Library, 807 W. Market St.

NOTE: Different night, different location for this special presentation.

Back by popular demand after Karen’s “standing-room only” workshops for the Akron Home & Flower Show’s Ecovillage exhibit

Karen will share her gardening tips while still early in the growing season!

·         Learn what to grow in and how to grow your vegetable garden

·         Learn how to prepare what you grow in your vegetable garden

·         Is backyard poultry or goat-raising a possibility?

·         Share your ideas about local fresh food grown in your backyard

Kidron market gardener Karen Geiser will bring along examples of what is
growing on their family farm this time of year. Her family raises grass fed animals and a one acre market  garden and they love to experiment with everything from blue potatoes and yard  long beans to cold frames, kim-chi and homemade cheese. Karen does weekly  gardening demos at Lehmans store and is also the co-author of Local Choices (Carlisle Press 2010) which offers a friendly introduction to local foods. You can learn more about her farm at www.KarensGarden.net.

Connecting people to their food is important to her family and currently there
are a number of Amish farmers in their area expanding their produce growing
and looking for marketing options. Karen is excited about exploring
possibilities in Akron that would offer an outlet for her neighbors' products.

The NEOhaus Institute

The NEOhaus Institute is a 501-3c non-profit based in Akron, Ohio focused on the development of cutting-edge, affordable and practical green building principles that stimulates economic development in the urban core. It is bringing an ecovillage to Akron.

Education. Consumer education about ecoliving, green building and urban farming sustainability practices.

Building. NEOhaus combines the best of modern building science--the Passive House technologies--with highly scrutinized sustainable building materials and techniques.

If you are looking for energy-efficient and greenbuilt custom home and xeriscape and raingarden landscape designs, information on sustainable residential developments and office environments, existing NEOhaus homes and models for sale, and how to get the word out on your sustainability products, services or efforts.

Community. NEOhaus recognizes that green building projects must work in tandem with the needs and wants of the residential community where it's situated.  Its success depends upon educating and raising awareness of all involved in the homebuilding process, including homebuyers and renters, realtors, financial institutions, community organizations, municipalities, business community and landscapers.
